94 percent of IT graduates are not fit for hiring – C. P. Gurnani, CEO, Tech Mahindra

18.6 million without jobs in India this year, unemployment rate to stand at 3.5 per cent in 2019. According to its latest report by ILO, India has an estimated 18.6 million jobless in the country this year which will increase to 18.9 million in 2019.

There has been so many discussions on campus to corporate, Institutions has been trying hard to groom students by various means like Student Exchange Programs, Personality Grooming Sessions, Soft Skills & Communication Training etc. But still the gap could not be bridged and corporations are finding difficulty in filling their vacancies. As a last resort corporate runs towards IIMs, IITs and some more institutes of repute but In India as of February 2017, there are 789 universities, 37,204 colleges and 11,443 stand-alone institutions in India, as per the latest statistics from the UGC website which are producing high number of students so that should be the focus.

Hereby I suggest few points which highlight the need and ways of Corporate to Campus strategy-

Expertise Sharing:

Corporations should come back institutions with the agenda of knowledge sharing which will help budding corporate leaders to understand the practices & need of contemporary skill-sets. This shouldn’t only focuse on typical guest lecturers but more of talks by people who are actually implementing strategies into business.

Curriculum Upgradation:

There has to be a mechanism where the corporates share their requirements to institutions before the session starts and keep assessments on the regular basis which will also reduce the hiring efforts and cost of corporates. It will also help corporate in better employee retention & deployment of the jobs.

Adoptions of Institute:

This emphasizes on the taking responsibility to skill up the fresher students by inviting them to workplace and giving presentations about their products, processes and expectations as it will lead them to become industry specific and more well versed with the corporate environment which reduces the cost of training & development and a fresh candidate can start working on projects from very first day.
