The Swedish furniture retailer has announced that it will create over 10,000 jobs (direct and indirect) in the state as it opens its Mumbai store in 2019.

“Next year, we are opening the Navi Mumbai store. We are planning to recruit 5,000 directly and an equal number of people will be employed indirectly in the state over the two to three years,” Ikea India’s people and culture manager Anna-Carin Mansson told PTI here.

IKEA expects to create opportunities in areas such as merchandising, store operations, supply chain and allied assembly services. The first big format store will open in Turbhe, Navi Mumbai and will employ 1000 direct co-workers and 1,500 indirect co-workers across services. IKEA’s distribution centre will be located at Chakan in Pune.  And 50 percent of its hires would include women “at all levels”.

We believe in equality and providing a balanced, safe and secure work environment for all employees. We are also open for recruiting from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) communities,-Per Hornell, Market Manager Maharashtra, IKEA India, said,

IKEA has a very strong diversity and inclusion agenda and the Navi Mumbai store will also employ 50% women coworker. For the coworker’s children there will be a crèche, idea is just to support more women to be a part of retail industry.

IKEA plans to open 25 stores in India by 2025 and has now also shared its plan to expand in UP (Lucknow, Agra and Noida)  with an investment of approximately Rs 500 crore in each.
