As they have said -” Individually we are one drop, but together we are an ocean”
Team Building is essential to make the organization a better place to work. When we hear the term ‘Team Building’ we are drawn to the term ‘team’ that is creative, effective, innovative and communicative at the same time. During my work tenure as Director-HR at Acreaty, I have seen many people in their workplace talk about building the team, and working as a team, but few understand how to create the experience of team work. To me, team building is all about appreciating, understanding and motivating the co-workers in the team as a unified group. If this happens, you will have a complete package of a productive, efficient, motivated and happy team.
Teamwork makes common people to achieve uncommon results. It inspires groups of employees to communicate through a series of planned events that are motivational as well as fun. The most successful team-building events witnessed that employees don’t feel like a day at the office. These events can be used to determine strong points in the employee’s personality, such as leadership skills, problem solving skills, etc. This can benefit the person by giving them job satisfaction and the opportunity to progress to their full potential.
When employees of any organization who rarely work together are allowed to communicate, they can discover that they enjoy the interaction and continue to bond with different people (from distinct fields) back at the office. Those employees who previously may not have been getting along with others will have to forget their differences & their dislike diminished as they work together for a common goal. When you belong to a team, it comes as a feeling part of something bigger than yourself. Team Building exercises in corporates also increase the trust factor among the workers. The long term benefits include improved communication skills, better concentration, decision making, stress reduction and obviously self-confidence.
WHY CORPORATES NEED TEAM-BUILDING ACTIVITIES?
From my own perspective, team building activities create the time to focus on the importance of teamwork and what is essential to make you a better team. Team building programs create a healthier environment and a more motivated, well-organized and proficient team. Effective team building means more engaged and active employees, which is good for company values and boosting the bottom line. The most successful team-building activities are ones that don’t feel like a day at the office. Activities or exercises that overtly aim to draw in leadership lessons or practical takeaways are less entertaining or powerful. Well, the innovative method is to plan all those activities that bring the co-workers together, resulting into sharing an experience or working towards the same goal. Your team members will start loving you more, your business will raise, and right people will “in command” and become responsible for their work processes.
WHY IS TEAM BUILDING AND TEAM WORK IMPORTANT?
It is also very useful to ensure that all the team members are “on the same page” with regards to the business goals through goal setting activities. Team building activities are advantageous for a variety of different types of teams. Some exercises can be designed for smaller teams and some for larger teams. This needs to be setup as an ongoing, frequent event – at least once in a month. When going through these events, people learn to trust each other, focus on glitches, and work together and cooperate with each other to find out the solutions.
After a period of refreshment and experiential learning, staffs can return back to work with a clearer vision, fresh perspective and renewed energy of what needs to be done. Higher morale of employees also leads to a reduced turnover rate, which eventually saves the company money in the hiring process. New and creative situations also bring opportunities for team members to show their strengths. For instance, some may be great at finding a practical solution to any situation, while others may excel at directing its operation and communicating the vision, and so on. This may also allow us to see new strengths in our employees that can be better utilized at work. You can also try something new take your crew to an adventure course and give chance to solve problems as a team, it’s like out of the box solutions.
The time we spend with our co-workers, the benefits of investing time in team building cannot be overemphasize. This benefit is often ignored or unnoticed, but I believe it is one of the most important to have in any workplace. Now that you are aware of the significance of team building for high performance, let us take a look at some noticeable benefits of doing team-building activities at work include:
- Accelerates collaborative and motivated work environment as these innovative exercises or activities are seen as a move towards bringing employees together.
- Aids in improving decision-making and problem solving skills as so many heads/hands contribute in the process.
- Promotes meaningful communication as employees come to know personality, behavior, strengths and weaknesses of their co-workers.
- Facilitate use of creativeness and out-of-the-box thinking by moving employees away from the comfort zone of usual job site and recharges and refreshes them.
- Creates a healthy atmosphere to enhance employee productivity by identifying and eliminating obstacles/ complications or by improving present ways of working.
- Boosts employee self-confidence as they feel connected with the company and colleagues, an important reason for employee retention.
- Brain teasers or creative games can also keep everyone active, thus helps creative juices flow, which in turn improve productivity.
- Finally, the insights and learning from team-building exercises can be transferred to the actual work environment, which results in better work equations and corporate performance.
Team building exercises or activities can reinforce the value of having fun in the workplace and we all know what significant results can actually be achieved when fun is involved in the workplace. Well, team building also provides the opportunity to grow respect for each other in a fun-filled environment. There is no doubt that having fun is a huge part of what we provide at the workplace, but behind that there is team building and cooperation. No matter how you look at it, team building is significant to incorporate into any business or organization. It could really prove a difference!
