The central government has recently approved a 2% hike in Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for its employees and pensioners.
This decision, effective from January 1, 2025, was finalized during a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 28, 2025.
The move is set to benefit over one crore employees and pensioners, providing financial relief amid rising inflation.
The increased DA will be disbursed with the April 2025 salary. It will also include arrears for January, February, and March 2025.
Payment Date and Arrears Disbursement
Central government employees can expect to receive their revised DA along with their April 2025 salary.
This payment will include the arrears for the first three months of the year—January, February, and March.
This lump sum disbursement is anticipated to provide immediate financial relief to employees and pensioners.
For employees with a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000, the 2% DA hike translates to an additional ₹360 per month.
Consequently, the arrears for three months will amount to ₹1,080.
Pensioners with a basic pension of ₹9,000 will receive an increase of ₹180 per month. This increase will result in total arrears of ₹540 for the three-month period.
The 2% increase in DA raises the rate from 53% to 55% of the basic salary or pension.
This adjustment will impose an annual financial burden of approximately ₹6,614.04 crore on the exchequer.
The government has highlighted the importance of this measure, despite its significant cost.
It aims to safeguard the purchasing power of employees and pensioners against inflation.
How to Verify DA Credit
Central government employees can verify the credit of their revised DA and arrears through several methods:
- Salary Slip: Review the April 2025 salary slip to find the DA listed as a separate component of the gross salary.
- Bank Statement: Check the bank account for the credited salary in April 2025 and compare it with the previous month’s salary to confirm the DA increase and arrears payment.
- Online Portals: Many government departments provide access to salary slips and pay details online. Employees can log into their department’s official portal or the Employee Self-Service Portal to check the updated salary breakdown.
- HR or Accounts Department: Employees can also reach out to their department’s HR or accounts team for clarification on the DA credit and any discrepancies.
