H-1B Visa Sponsorship Declines Among Top Tech Companies

The latest data from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reveals a notable shift in the landscape of H-1B visa sponsorships for 2024.

Major US companies, including tech giants like Amazon, Infosys, and Tata Consultancy Services, have significantly reduced their sponsorship of H-1B visas for skilled foreign workers.

This trend indicates a move towards alternative strategies and a focus on domestic talent.

Decline in H-1B Visa Sponsorships

The analysis of H-1B visa sponsorship data for 2024 shows a significant decline in sponsorships, particularly by major US tech companies.

Firms like Amazon, Infosys, Google, and IBM have reduced the number of H-1B visas issued this year.

While Indian nationals continue to dominate the pool of H-1B visa holders, making up over 72% of all the recipients in 2023, US companies seem to be scaling back their reliance on this category.

Top 10 H-1B Visa Sponsors in 2024

Despite the overall decline, some companies remain at the top of the list for H-1B visa sponsorships in 2024.

According to USCIS data, the top 10 companies sponsoring the most H-1B visas this year are as follows:

  1. Amazon Com Services LLC: 9,265 approvals
  2. Infosys Limited: 8,140 approvals
  3. Cognizant Technology Solutions: 6,321 approvals
  4. Google LLC: 5,364 approvals
  5. Tata Consultancy Services Limited: 5,274 approvals
  6. Meta Platforms Inc: 4,844 approvals
  7. Microsoft Corporation: 4,725 approvals
  8. Apple Inc: 3,873 approvals
  9. HCL America Inc: 2,953 approvals
  10. IBM Corporation: 2,906 approvals

Impact on the Workforce

The reduction in sponsorships by these top companies suggests a shift in their hiring strategies.

Many Indian IT firms, which have substantial US operations, are now focusing more on local recruitment and Green Card sponsorship.

This trend contrasts with the surge in H-1B applications by US-based firms like Amazon and Google in recent years.

The 2024 data on sponsorships highlights a significant shift in the hiring practices of major US companies.

As these companies reduce their reliance on it, the focus on domestic talent and alternative strategies becomes more pronounced.

The long-term impact of this trend on the US job market and the tech industry remains to be seen.
