PM Internship Scheme, aimed at providing internship opportunities to young Indians in top companies, has faced a rocky start with many candidates backing out after receiving offers.
The pilot project, which began in November 2024, saw an initial acceptance rate of only about one-third. A significant number of candidates withdrew at the last minute.
Several reasons have been cited for the high rate of withdrawals, including pressure from parents and a lack of seriousness among some applicants.
Many candidates applied for the scheme without a genuine interest in the internships. This led to a high number of rejections after offers were extended.
The corporate affairs ministry has acknowledged these issues and plans to address them as the scheme expands.
PM Internship Scheme Overview and Initial Challenges
Announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the July 2024 budget, the PM Internship Scheme aims to provide internship opportunities to 10 million young Indians over five years.
The scheme targets 500 top companies, including major names like Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Bank, Maruti Suzuki, and Larsen & Toubro.
The goal is to enhance employability among young Indians by giving them hands-on experience in real-world business environments.
The initial phase of the scheme saw over 620,000 applications for 125,000 internship positions.
However, the acceptance rate was initially low, with only about one-third of the offers being accepted.
This led to concerns about the effectiveness of the scheme. It highlighted the need for better preparation and outreach to ensure a higher acceptance rate in the future.
Improvements and Future Plans
Despite the initial setbacks, the acceptance rate has gradually improved, reaching about two-thirds of the offers extended.
The corporate affairs ministry is working to address the issues identified during the pilot phase and plans to expand the scheme in the coming months.
The ministry aims to ensure that the scheme reaches its target of providing internship opportunities to 10 million young Indians.
This goal is set to be achieved over the next five years.
The PM Internship Scheme, despite its rocky start, holds great potential for enhancing the employability of young Indians.
It aims to provide them with valuable work experience in top companies.
The corporate affairs ministry’s efforts to address the initial challenges and improve the acceptance rate will be crucial.
These efforts will help ensure the success of the scheme in the long run.
