Union Minister of Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, recently emphasized the need to redefine the concept of a job beyond mere employment.
Speaking at the release of the World Bank’s ‘Job at Your Doorstep’ report, Mansukh, along with Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan, highlighted the importance of broadening the definition of jobs to better reflect economic opportunities and true empowerment.
Redefining Job and Employment
Manuskh stressed that the current definition of a job is too narrow and does not capture the full spectrum of economic activities and opportunities.
He suggested that the definition should include informal education and skills development, which are crucial for preparing the workforce for future challenges.
Dharmendra echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for continuous upskilling and reskilling of the workforce to future-proof them against technological disruptions.
The ‘Job at Your Doorstep’ report by the World Bank examines the job landscape in six states.
These states include Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Rajasthan.
It identifies key priority sectors and roles that offer the highest employment potential for students graduating from secondary school.
The report aims to provide in-depth diagnostics on skilling and jobs.
This will enable stakeholders to create new architectures and make progressive policies for empowering the Indian population.
National Education Policy (NEP) 2020
Dharmendra highlighted the role of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in mainstreaming skilling in schools.
The policy envisions building a future-ready workforce by integrating skilling into the academic curriculum.
This approach is expected to help India become the skill capital of the world and drive the global economy.
The Government of India has an ambitious plan to transform the economy towards a high-income country status by 2047.
To achieve this goal, the government aims to address challenges facing the employment landscape. They also aim to prepare the workforce for the future.
This involves adopting a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to collaboratively skill, upskill, and reskill India’s large population.
Redefining the definition of a job beyond employment is a significant step towards creating better economic opportunities.
This approach aims to provide true empowerment for the Indian population.
