Ministry of Labour and Employment has announced that over 30.4 crore informal workers have registered on e-Shram portal as of December 1, 2024.
This massive registration drive aims to create a comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers (NDUW), providing these workers with a Universal Account Number (UAN) on a self-declaration basis.
Significance of e-Shram Portal
e-Shram portal was launched on August 26, 2021. It is designed to support unorganised workers by offering them access to various government schemes.
The portal has successfully registered 27.22 crore workers from rural areas, highlighting its reach and impact across the country.
The initiative is a significant step towards formalizing the informal sector. It ensures that these workers receive the benefits they deserve.
e-Shram portal has integrated or mapped 12 schemes of different central ministries and departments to date.
These include the Pradhan Mantri Surakhsa Bima Yojana (PMSBY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Ayushman Bharat, Prime Minister Street Vendors AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM-SVANidhi), and PM Awas Yojana, among others.
This integration ensures that registered workers can easily access these schemes and avail themselves of the benefits.
Minister’s Statement
Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Shobha Karandlaje, informed Parliament about the significant milestone achieved by e-Shram portal.
She emphasized the importance of this initiative in providing a safety net for informal workers and ensuring their inclusion in formal economy.
While the registration numbers are impressive, challenge lies in effectively utilizing this database. Goal is to deliver tangible benefits to the workers.
Government and various stakeholders must work together to streamline processes and ensure that the benefits reach the intended beneficiaries.
Looking ahead, this portal has the potential to transform informal sector. It aims to provide a robust framework for worker support and empowerment.
