Young Workforce Drives 17.01 Lakh Enrollments in ESI Scheme

Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has reported that 17.01 lakh new workers were enrolled under the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme in December 2024.

This substantial increase in enrollments highlights the growing awareness and importance of social security benefits among the Indian workforce.

The data, released by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, provides valuable insights into the demographics and trends associated with the ESI scheme.

ESI scheme is a social security and health insurance program designed to provide financial protection and medical benefits to employees in India.

Established in 1952, the scheme is managed by the ESIC and covers employees earning up to a specified wage limit.

The scheme offers a range of benefits, including medical care, cash benefits during sickness and maternity, and disability benefits.

It also provides dependents’ benefits in case of death due to employment injury.

ESI Scheme: Enrollment Data for December 2024

ESIC’s provisional payroll data shows that employers added a total of 17.01 lakh new employees to the ESI scheme in December 2024.

This marks a significant increase in enrollments compared to previous months.

It reflects the growing emphasis on social security and health insurance among employers and employees alike.

Demographic Insights

The data reveals that out of the total 17.01 lakh new enrollments, 8.22 lakh employees belong to the age group of up to 25 years.

This amounts to approximately 48.35% of the total registrations.

This indicates a strong participation of young workers in the ESI scheme, highlighting the importance of social security benefits for the younger workforce.

The data shows that 20,360 new establishments joined the social security ambit of the ESI scheme in December 2024.

Regional Distribution

The enrollment data also provides insights into the regional distribution of new workers under the ESI scheme.

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat, as major industrial and commercial hubs, have witnessed significant enrollments.

This reflects the concentration of employment opportunities in these regions.

The data underscores the need for continued efforts to expand the coverage of the ESI scheme. These efforts should target other regions and sectors.

Impact on Social Security and Government Initiatives

The substantial increase in enrollments under the ESI scheme is a positive development for India’s social security landscape.

The scheme provides crucial financial protection and medical benefits to workers, ensuring their well-being and security.

The growing participation of young workers in the scheme is particularly encouraging.

It indicates a greater awareness of the importance of social security benefits among the younger generation.

The Government of India is actively promoting the ESI scheme and other social security programs. These efforts aim to ensure comprehensive coverage for the workforce.

The government has undertaken various initiatives to encourage enrollment.

These initiatives include awareness campaigns, outreach programs, and policy reforms to enhance the benefits provided under the scheme.

The government’s efforts to bring more establishments under the social security ambit have also contributed to the increase in enrollments.
