WPP, the parent company of advertising agencies such as GroupM and Ogilvy, has announced plans to significantly expand its presence in India by doubling the staff at its newly opened Centre of Excellence (COE) in Chennai by mid-2025.
The company aims to grow its Chennai tech hub from 330 employees initially to about 650 by mid-2025, with potential growth to a total workforce of 2,000-3,000.
WPP Expansion Plans and Strategy
The expansion is part of WPP’s broader strategy to tap into India’s skilled workforce and support its global growth.
The Chennai campus, located at RMZ One Paramount, spans over 62,000 square feet and is designed to accommodate over 330 employees in its initial phase.
The campus features a dedicated marketplace of food and beverage options, EV charging, a day-care centre, several permanent art installations, and a wellness terrace that includes a futsal court, a running track, and a yoga deck.
The Chennai campus will initially focus on enterprise IT, with plans to expand into other units in the future.
WPP India country manager CVL Srinivas stated that the scalability of operations and the expertise of the team in India make it the prime location to power WPP’s global support functions.
The company is also exploring additional campuses in cities such as Coimbatore, Bengaluru, and potentially Kolkata, aiming to strengthen its presence in key urban centres.
India as a Key Growth Market
India is WPP’s fifth-largest market, with a talent pool of over 11,000 professionals.
The country accounts for nearly 5% of the company’s global revenue and has been a crucial growth driver for WPP.
The expansion in Chennai aligns with the company’s strategy to scale up its operations in India, leveraging the region’s skilled workforce and strong infrastructure.
The new Chennai campus is designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating green building materials and LEED Platinum certification due to its sustainability credentials.
The campus also aims to enhance the employee experience, providing inspiring, collaborative, and flexible spaces for its people.
WPP CEO Mark Read emphasized the company’s commitment to investing in India, creating spaces that foster collaboration, inspire creativity, and enable career development.
WPP’s ambitious expansion plans in Chennai reflect its commitment to leveraging India’s talent pool and supporting its global growth.
The company’s focus on sustainability, employee experience, and strategic growth positions it well to continue thriving in one of its fastest-growing markets.
