The former vice-president of Human resources (Former VP-HR) at Microsoft Chris Williams is backing and supporting the idea of employees working multiple jobs.
However, Former VP-HR of Microsoft Chris Williams has also emphasized that for an employee working for a competitor the employer should enforce non-compete and confidentiality restrictions.
Microsoft Chris Williams has said, “What they choose to do when not working for you is simply none of your business.”
“Working multiple jobs is a part of the fabric of the working world — so common that it’s in the origin stories of many successful people”, he added.
The former Microsoft executive further said, ‘My mom worked two jobs to put us, kids, through college’.”
However, the other leaders were against employees working multiple jobs or Moonlighting. Earlier, Infosys said that moonlighting is not permitted according to the employees’ code of conduct of the company and described it with the taglines ‘No two-timing, no moonlighting’ and ‘No double lives.
Earlier this year, Wipro criticized the moonlighting practices and termed them as ‘unethical’ and ‘cheating’. Also on the other hand, Happiest Minds and Wipro laid off employees due to moonlighting.
Vineet Nayar, founder, and chairman of the Sampark Foundation and former CEO of HCL Tech has said that the employees in the IT industries are impacted by lower salaries and a lack of opportunities.
According to Vineet Nayar the following points on moonlighting in the IT sector:
- The widening gap between the salaries of freshers versus top management.
- The lack of purpose and innovation in the profit-driven culture of IT companies and the growing start-up economy.
Vineet said “When the internet came into our lives, we resisted big time thinking that our data will be stolen. But it was unstoppable — it came to our desktops, mobile phones, and even watches. And since people couldn’t do anything about it so they learned to use it rather than being abused by it. Moonlighting too is an unstoppable event. You can resist it but you can’t stop it. You need to understand the reasons behind it”.
Tech Mahindra ex-CEO and MD, C P Gurnani had said that we support side gigs as the company is a digital company and not a legacy firm.
Swiggy has announced a new “moonlighting” policy for its delivery personnel, which allows its employees to take up gigs or projects outside of their regular employment at the company.
