Google HR says that employees work over eight hours a day

Google HR department has clarified that the average Google employee works more than a typical 9-to-5 work day.

The debate of a 70-hour workweek surfaced when Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy requested that Indian youngsters should work 70 hours a week.

Narayana Murthy stated, “If we want to compete with the fastest growing countries like China and Japan, we need to boost up our work productivity.”

“At the moment, India’s work productivity is very low. The government also must reduce the time it takes for decision-making and curb corruption in bureaucracy”, Narayana Murthy added.

According to CNBC, an American multinational technology company, Google’s HR department has clarified that the average Google employee works more than a normal 9-to-5 work day.

An internal memo reported by CNBC, “Most salaried Googlers already work longer than 8-hour days on the days they’re working”

“Nobody is 120% FTE [Full Time Employee] for working a normal FT job at Google, so working a compressed 100% schedule isn’t really realistic”, it added.

Other Industrial Leaders on 70 hours a week

Mukesh Bansal, CureFit and Myntra founder joined the debate and said on LinkedIn, “Working 40 or 70 hours a week is a ”personal choice” and people should first understand their priorities.”

Radhika Gupta MD & CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund Between offices and homes has said that many Indian women have been working more than 70 hours per week.

Radhika Gupta said, “Between offices and homes, many Indian women have been working many more than seventy-hour weeks to build India (through our work) and the next generation of Indians (our children).”

“For years and decades. With a smile, and without a demand for overtime. Funnily, no one has debated about us on Twitter”, she added.

JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal, took to social media platform X (formally Twitter) saying, “A 5 day week culture is not what a rapidly developing nation of our size needs. Our PM @narendramodi ji works over 14-16 hours every day.”

“My father used to work 12-14 hours, 7 days a week. I work 10-12 hours every day. We have to find passion in our work and in nation-building”, the post added.
