Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal Mandates Weekly Reports

Ola founder and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has mandated that all employees across his companies submit weekly updates on their accomplishments.

This directive, titled “Kya Chal Raha Hai?” or “What’s going on?”, requires employees to send brief updates in 3-5 bullet points every week.

The initiative, which echoes a similar policy introduced by tech billionaire Elon Musk, aims to enhance accountability and streamline operations within the company.

Ola CEO’s ‘Kya Chal Raha Hai?’ Initiative

Bhavish Aggarwal’s directive was communicated to employees through an internal email, where he emphasized the importance of adhering to the new reporting requirement with “no exceptions.”

The initiative was put into immediate effect, with the first deadline set for the end of the day following the announcement.

Future reports are due every Sunday.

Employees are required to send their updates to their managers and a dedicated company email address, Kyachalrahahai@olagroup.in, using the subject line “Weekly updates.”

In his email, Bhavish wrote, “We’re starting ‘Kya Chal Raha Hai?’ — a simple way to share your weekly updates directly with me and your managers, starting today.”

Bhavish added, “Please send a brief update to your manager and Kyachalrahahai@olagroup.in with 3-5 bullet points about what you got done last week.”

He asked employees to “Keep it simple and to the point.”

Bhavish stated, “The deadline for this is today end of day. Going forward, we will expect the email before Sunday end of day. Everyone has to send this, no exceptions.”

Reasons Behind the Initiative

The decision to implement the “Kya Chal Raha Hai?” initiative comes amid significant changes within Ola. These changes include a major internal restructuring exercise.

The company has initiated layoffs affecting around 1,000 employees across sales, distribution, and marketing departments.

The restructuring aims to streamline operations, improve margins, reduce costs, and enhance customer experience by eliminating redundant roles.

Bhavish seeks to increase accountability with his directive. It aligns employees with the company’s goals and objectives.

By requiring weekly updates, Bhavish aims to keep a closer eye on the progress of various projects and initiatives.

This ensures that the company remains agile and responsive to market demands.

Impact on Employees at Ola

The new reporting requirement has significant implications for Ola’s employees.

While the initiative aims to enhance accountability and streamline operations, it also places additional responsibilities on employees.

They must now regularly document and report their accomplishments.

This move has drawn comparisons to Elon Musk’s recent mandate for US federal employees to submit weekly accomplishment reports.

The directive comes at a time when Ola is undergoing significant changes, including layoffs and restructuring efforts.

Ola offers internal opportunities, outplacement services, and severance packages to employees affected by the layoffs.

The company aims to minimize the impact on employees during this transition. It also aims to ensure a smooth transition for all stakeholders.
