Ride-hailing platform Rapido has announced the launch of its new Pink Rapido bike fleet in Karnataka, exclusively driven by women for women.
This initiative aims to create 25,000 job opportunities for women by the end of the year.
The announcement was made by Rapido’s co-founder, Pavan Guntupalli, at the Global Investors Summit in Bengaluru.
Earlier in December 2024, Uber India launched Uber Moto Women. This on-demand two-wheeler service connects female riders with female drivers.
This service addresses women’s safety and mobility needs while empowering female drivers with flexible earning opportunities.
Rapido Empowering Women Through Safe Mobility
The Pink Rapido service is designed to promote safe mobility for women while providing them with a secure and empowering work environment.
Pavan emphasized that the initiative is not just about job creation but also about ensuring a safe ride experience.
“If a woman can travel safely with an unknown driver and reach her destination with ease, we consider that our success,” he said.
Rapido aims to provide 25,000 job opportunities for women by introducing women captains on Rapido bikes.
The company has implemented several safety measures to ensure a secure ride experience.
Even women without advanced education or specialized skills are finding opportunities in nearby towns. This is a matter of pride for the company.
Around 35% of Rapido’s workforce comes from smaller cities and towns.
Expansion and Previous Initiatives
In September 2023, Rapido introduced the Bike Pink service in Chennai. The initiative aims to provide women riders with female drivers for safer commutes.
The initial phase saw the company supplying 25 electric bikes to women drivers facing financial difficulties.
These drivers received comprehensive training in safety and driving skills through programs conducted in partnership with various NGOs.
At the time of launch, Rapido had over 100 active female drivers in Chennai.
The company planned to onboard more than 500 additional female drivers within the following three months.
Rapido’s initiative is also a strategic move for the growing shared mobility platforms.
A KPMG report titled Unlocking the Potential of Bike Taxis in India states that people completed over 280 million bike taxi rides across platforms in 2022.
Bengaluru alone recorded over one million rides monthly, making it one of the largest bike taxi markets in the country.
