Samsung has sought the intervention of the Tamil Nadu government to ensure the safety of its workers and maintain ease of doing business at its Sriperumbudur plant.
The request comes amid escalating protests by a section of workers, who have been demanding the reinstatement of three suspended union leaders.
The situation has raised concerns about industrial stability and the company’s ability to maintain a safe and productive workplace.
Samsung Standoff: Background and Company’s Response
The standoff began on February 5, 2025, when workers at Samsung’s Sriperumbudur plant initiated a sit-in strike.
The protest was triggered by the suspension of three union leaders affiliated with the CITU-backed Samsung India Workers Union (SIWU).
The suspended leaders were accused of violating company policies, leading to their disciplinary action.
The workers, however, have been demanding their reinstatement, arguing that the suspensions were unjust and retaliatory.
Samsung has maintained a firm stance on the issue, emphasizing its zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities that disrupt industrial stability and peace at the workplace.
The company has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and stable workplace for all employees.
In a statement, Samsung said, “At Samsung, our priority is to maintain a safe and stable workplace for all workers. A certain section of workers once again illegally tried to disrupt operations and industrial peace today. We have a zero-tolerance policy for any illegal activities by workers that disrupt industrial stability and peace at the workplace”.
Appeal to the Tamil Nadu Government
In light of the ongoing protests, Samsung has urged the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and ensure the safety of its workers.
The company has called on state authorities to maintain discipline and provide ease of doing business.
Samsung’s appeal highlights the challenges faced by the company in managing labor relations and maintaining operational stability.
The company stated, “While our production remains uninterrupted, we urge the state authorities to secure the safety of our workers, maintain discipline and provide ease of doing business”.
Despite the protests, Samsung has managed to keep its production operations uninterrupted.
The Sriperumbudur plant, which manufactures refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines, is a significant contributor to Samsung’s $12 billion revenue in India.
However, the ongoing labor unrest poses a risk to the company’s long-term operational stability and its ability to meet production targets.
Previous Labor Unrest at Samsung
This is not the first time Samsung has faced labor unrest at its Sriperumbudur plant.
Last year, employees went on a 37-day strike demanding wage revisions and better working conditions.
The strike was eventually called off after the Tamil Nadu government’s intervention.
However, the truce was short-lived, with workers alleging victimization and unfair treatment by the management.
The current standoff is a continuation of the unresolved labor issues that have plagued the plant for years.
The Tamil Nadu government has been actively involved in mediating labor disputes in the state.
The government’s intervention in last year’s strike at Samsung’s plant was instrumental in bringing the parties to the negotiating table.
However, the current situation has put the government under scrutiny, with critics questioning its handling of the labor unrest.
The DMK dispensation has been criticized for not intervening at the right time to prevent the escalation of the protests.
