Tata Steel has launched an all-women shift at its Noamundi iron mine in Jharkhand, marking a significant milestone as the first initiative of its kind in India.
This move is part of Tata Steel’s broader mission to promoting gender diversity and empowering women in traditionally male-dominated industries.
Tata Steel All-Women Shift Initiative
The all-women shift at Noamundi iron mine is a part of Tata Steel’s “Women@Mines” program, which was launched in 2019.
The initiative aims to recruit and train women from local communities to operate heavy earth-moving machinery (HEMM) and participate in the mining ecosystem.
Under the “Tejaswini” initiative, women underwent extensive training, including technical and operational skills, simulator sessions, safety protocols, and physical fitness.
The success of the “Tejaswini” program has been remarkable, with women being deployed across various roles such as dumper, shovel, dozer, grader, and drill operators.
The recent launch of the all-women shift represents a landmark achievement for Tata Steel and the Indian mining industry.
D.B. Sundara Ramam, Vice President of Raw Material at Tata Steel, stated, “This all-women shift represents a landmark achievement not only for Tata Steel but also for the Indian mining industry. It is a testament to the resilience and capability of women breaking stereotypes.”

Tata Steel is committed to continuing its efforts to create more opportunities for women in the mining ecosystem.
The company aims to achieve 20% diversity in its India workforce and has already made significant progress towards this goal.
All-women shift at Noamundi iron mine is a significant addition to the 100 glorious years of mining at the site.
