TCS' Research Webinar in collaboration with ACM India
Nine decades ago, the father of modern computer science, Alan Turing, laid the foundation for today’s computing with the introduction of the general-purpose computer.

TCS in collaboration with ACM India organized a Research Webinar session on Career Opportunities in Computing Research on 28th June 2022. The experts from industry and academia discuss the prospects of research.

Nine decades ago, the father of modern computer science, Alan Turing, laid the foundation for today’s computing with the introduction of the general-purpose computer.

Fast forward to today where everyone relies on at least one such device to perform basic tasks. Technologists, researchers, and scientists are continually using the latest technologies to perform computing tasks in the most efficient way.

Panelists of the TCS Research Webinar were:

  • Prof. Jeff Ullman, Stanford
  • W. Ascherman Professor of Computer Science (Emeritus)
  • Ranjita Bhagwan, Senior Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research India
  • Prof. Supratik Chakraborty, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Bombay
  • Dr. Swaran Lata, Head, TDIL Programme, MeitY

Along with the session moderator:

  • Dr. Gautam Shroff, TCS Fellow, SVP and Head, TCS Research.

The panelists presented their views and discussed the actual scenario, career opportunities, and gave genuine feedback on Research. The entire webinar session can be checked here.

The “here and now” opportunities are limitless. Imagine inventing the future of industries and society using computing. This is what a research career in computing has in store. The webinar session focused and questioned the following during the session:

  • So, what does it take to conduct world-class research in computing?
  • Does one need a Ph.D. for a successful research career?
  • What are some emerging areas of research?
  • Are the boundaries between academic research and industry research blurring?
  • What are the opportunities in India as it moves towards becoming a digital nation?

About ACM India Council:

The ACM India Council was created by ACM to recognize and support Indian ACM members and activities. The ACM India Council is an effort of ACM, the world’s largest educational and scientific computing society, aimed at increasing the level and visibility of ACM activities across India.

The ACM India Council activities, involving both academia and industry in computing, include research, organization of high-quality computing conferences, advancing Computer Science education, and awards to recognize achievement.
