Wipro, one of India’s leading IT services companies, has faced scrutiny over its entry-level salary structure for freshers.
For over a decade, the starting salary for fresh graduates has remained in the range of ₹3-4 lakh per annum.
This has sparked debates about compensation trends in the IT industry, especially in light of inflation and rising living costs.
Recently, Wipro’s management addressed these concerns, shedding light on the factors influencing this stagnation.
Wipro Entry-Level Pay: Demand-Supply Dynamics and Industry-Wide Trends
According to Saurabh Govil, Wipro’s Chief Human Resources Officer, the primary reason for the unchanged salary structure is the demand-supply equation in the job market.
India produces over 15 lakh engineering graduates annually, creating a surplus of entry-level talent.
This oversupply, coupled with limited demand for higher starting salaries, has kept compensation levels stable across the industry.
Saurabh emphasized that this is not a Wipro-specific issue but an industry-wide phenomenon driven by market forces.
He assured that Wipro’s compensation at all levels remains competitive and aligned with market standards.
The IT sector in India has long been characterized by its ability to absorb a large number of fresh graduates.
However, the entry-level salary has remained relatively stagnant across major IT firms.
Companies like Wipro, Infosys, and TCS have faced similar challenges in revising fresher salaries due to the industry’s cost-sensitive nature and global economic uncertainties.
Wipro’s Hiring Strategy and Management’s Response
In the financial year 2025-26, Wipro plans to hire approximately 10,000 freshers, depending on the demand environment.
The company has adopted a cautious approach to hiring, ensuring that new recruits are effectively deployed in projects.
This strategy stems from past experiences where onboarding without proper deployment led to inefficiencies.
Wipro has faced criticism for its salary structure, especially in light of inflation and rising living costs.
Critics argue that stagnant salaries may deter top talent from joining the company.
Additionally, Wipro’s decision in 2023 to reduce salary offers for some candidates from ₹6.5 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh drew significant backlash.
Despite the criticism, Wipro remains optimistic about revising its salary structure in the future.
Saurabh stated that the company is committed to offering competitive compensation and will adjust salaries as market conditions evolve.
He also highlighted Wipro’s focus on providing training programs and career growth opportunities to freshers, which add value beyond monetary compensation.
