Recently, An Indian multinational corporation, Wipro rolled out a revised offer letter for recruits awaiting onboarding at the company for over 12 months. The company has reduced the employee’s salary by 50 percent from Rs 6.5 lakh to Rs 3.5 lakh per annum.
The company said in an email to candidates, “Like others in our industry, we continue to assess global economies and customer needs, which factor in our hiring plans. Currently, we have project engineers’ roles available for recruitment with an annual compensation of Rs 3.5 lakh.”
The company went on to tell these candidates, “If you choose to accept this offer, all previous offers will stand void. We encourage you to grab this opportunity as it is time-bound.”
Wipro provides training to freshers employees. This gives an opportunity to the Elite fresher candidate to upgrade to the ‘Turbo’ category. This also upgrades the salary package of employees.
According to a recent ET report, TV Mohandas Pai, Arian Capital Partners said, “When a company earns Rs 10000-11000 crores a year, saving some Rs 50-100 crores is not going to make a difference.”
“A company is known by how it treats the most vulnerable part of its employees and the most vulnerable part of its employees are freshers who join with dreams in their eyes, having worked very hard and they look forward to joining a great company, the company of their dreams,” TV Mohandas Pai added.
The ET report also included that it is okay with deferring one or two months because as Narayana Murthy has said it is all subject to economic cycles but when economic cycles come the senior people should sacrifice the most.
However, the IT employee union Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) has already filed a complaint against Wipro in the Labour Ministry on the fresher’s package.
Harpreet Singh Saluja, President of Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), said, “We strongly condemn Wipro’s unethical move to reduce the salaries of employees awaiting to join. It is unacceptable that the burden of the company’s financial troubles is being placed solely on the shoulders of the employees.”
“We demand that the management reconsider its decision and engage in meaningful dialogue with the union to find a mutually beneficial solution. We will not stand by while the rights and dignity of our members are being violated”, Harpreet Singh Saluja added.
