India has seen a remarkable surge in internship opportunities, with postings doubling over the past three years, according to a recent report by Indeed.
The report highlights that internships are becoming a strategic priority for organisations aiming to equip young professionals with practical, industry-relevant skills.
Between February 2022 and February 2025, internship listings rose by 103%, indicating a strong shift in how companies are bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world business needs.
Industry Evolution Driving Demand for Interns
The rise in internships coincides with rapid advancements in fields like artificial intelligence, data analytics, and digital transformation.
Companies are increasingly relying on internships not only to provide hands-on learning but also to identify and nurture future talent.
This evolving approach suggests that internships are no longer viewed as mere temporary roles but as vital talent pipelines for long-term hiring strategies.
As businesses adapt to technological shifts, internships have become key to preparing the next generation of professionals for modern work environments.
Top Locations and Compensation Trends
Regionally, Delhi, Karnataka, and Maharashtra are leading the way in internship interest, accounting for 7.2%, 6.8%, and 6.2% of all internship searches, respectively.
These states are home to major urban centres and tech hubs, making them hotspots for early-career opportunities.
When it comes to compensation, the national average stipend for internships is ₹25,432 per month.
However, cities such as Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and Gurgaon offer stipends above this average, reflecting the higher cost of living and the competitive demand for skilled interns in these regions.
Conversely, cities like Chennai and Kolkata fall below the national average, indicating regional disparities in internship compensation.
This growing focus on internships underscores a broader transformation in India’s employment landscape, where skill development and practical exposure are gaining precedence.
