Automattic Announces Layoffs: 16% of Global Workforce Impacted

Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com, Tumblr, and WooCommerce, has announced a significant workforce reduction, laying off 16% of its global staff.

This decision, which affects over 280 employees across 90 countries, is part of a broader restructuring initiative aimed at enhancing agility, efficiency, and product quality.

The announcement was made by CEO Matt Mullenweg, who emphasized the need for the company to adapt to a competitive market and rapidly evolving technology.

Reasons Behind the Layoffs at Automattic

In a memo to employees, Matt explained that the restructuring was necessary to navigate the challenges posed by a highly competitive market and unprecedented technological advancements.

He highlighted the importance of improving productivity, profitability, and the company’s capacity to invest in its future.

The layoffs are intended to make Automattic more agile and responsive, break down inefficiencies, and focus on delivering high-quality products.

Matt stated, “We have reached an important crossroads. While our revenue continues to grow, we must ensure a viable financial model for long-term success.”

The decision to lay off employees, including some long-serving team members, underscores the difficult nature of this move.

Impact on Employees

The layoffs have affected employees across various divisions, including WooCommerce, Tumblr, and AI-focused initiatives.

In the United States, roles in sales, marketing, product management, design, and business operations were among those impacted.

Reports indicate that some teams, such as Day One, experienced layoffs exceeding 16%, with the organization described as “gutted.”

Automattic has guaranteed a comprehensive severance package for all affected employees.

Additionally, they will receive job placement assistance and have the option to keep their company laptops.

The company has also committed to clear and compassionate communication throughout the process, acknowledging the complexity of managing layoffs across 90 countries.

Broader Context and Challenges Facing Automattic

The layoffs come after a challenging period for Automattic.

The company has been involved in a legal dispute with WP Engine, a hosting provider accused of not sufficiently contributing to the open-source WordPress project.

This legal battle, coupled with internal tensions, has already led to the departure of several employees in the past year.

The restructuring aims to address these challenges and position Automattic for long-term success.

Despite the layoffs, Matt expressed confidence in Automattic’s ability to emerge stronger.

“I’m confident we will come out of this situation in a better position, poised to create a vibrant, profitable, well-designed company that will continue our mission to democratize the internet,” he said.
