Apple Chief People Officer Carol Surface Leaves Company

Carol Surface, Apple Chief People Officer, has decided to step down from her role after just 20 months with the tech giant.

Her departure marks yet another significant executive change within the company.

Role of Chief People Officer at Apple

The Chief People Officer position was established by splitting the human resources department from its previous oversight under Deirdre O’Brien, who had been Senior Vice President of People and Retail since 2019.

Carol Surface took on this critical role in early 2023, responsible for managing Apple’s workforce, fostering a positive work environment, and ensuring employee well-being.

Carol’s tenure at Apple was relatively short-lived.

Having joined the company in February 2023, she leaves behind a legacy that spans just under two years.

During her time as Chief People Officer, Carol likely grappled with the unique challenges posed by a rapidly growing tech company—one that consistently pushes the boundaries of innovation and global impact.

Reasons for Departure and Leadership Chnages

The exact reasons behind Carol’s departure remain undisclosed. Apple has not issued an official statement regarding her exit.

Speculation abounds: Did Apple reevaluate the need for the Chief People Officer role? Or did Carol receive an enticing offer elsewhere?

Without official confirmation, we can only speculate.

Carol’s departure adds to a series of recent executive changes at Apple.

Luca Maestri, the Chief Financial Officer, is set to leave the company at the end of 2024.

Additionally, Dan Riccio, who has been with Apple for decades, will soon retire.

These shifts in leadership signal a period of transition for the tech giant.

Deirdre O’Brien Takes CPO Role at Apple

With Carol’s departure, Deirdre O’Brien will once again oversee the responsibilities of the Chief People Officer.

Deirdre, who has a wealth of experience in both human resources and retail, will now manage the delicate balance of nurturing Apple’s talent while ensuring operational excellence.
