TCS and Rolls-Royce Join Forces for Zero-Carbon Aviation

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global leader in IT services, consulting, and business solutions, has recently strengthened its partnership with Rolls-Royce, the renowned British multinational specializing in civil aerospace, defense aerospace, services, and power systems.

This collaboration aims to drive sustainable initiatives within the aviation industry, particularly by researching hydrogen fuel system technology. The ultimate goal is to establish hydrogen as a viable zero-carbon aviation fuel of the future.

TCS partnership with Rolls-Royce: Key Objectives

The expanded partnership between Tata Consultancy Services and Rolls-Royce centers around addressing three critical challenges related to hydrogen use in aviation. TCS will provide engineering expertise to help Rolls-Royce optimize hydrogen combustion within aircraft engines.

Ensuring efficient and safe combustion is essential for achieving net-zero emissions. Efficient delivery of hydrogen fuel to the engine is crucial.

TCS will collaborate with Rolls-Royce to design and validate effective fuel delivery systems. Integrating hydrogen fuel systems seamlessly with existing aircraft engines requires careful engineering.

TCS’s domain knowledge will play a pivotal role in achieving this integration while maintaining safety standards.

Commitment to Sustainability

TCS’s involvement in this partnership underscores its broader commitment to driving positive societal impact through technology.

As the International Air Transport Association (IATA) sets ambitious targets for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, innovative solutions like hydrogen-based aviation fuel become imperative.

Tata Consultancy Services recognizes its role in shaping a more sustainable future and actively contributes to achieving these goals.

The announcement of this collaboration took place during the prestigious Farnborough International Airshow. TCS used this platform to showcase its technological prowess in the aviation industry.

Visitors witnessed how Tata Consultancy Services leverages its expertise to address complex challenges and drive innovation.

Regu Ayyaswamy, Senior Vice President and Global Head- Internet of Things and Digital Engineering, TCS, said, “TCS and Rolls-Royce have been partners in advancing engineering excellence for nearly a decade.”

He added, “The new partnership for research into hydrogen fuel systems represents a pivotal next step at a time when the aviation industry is faced with the urgent challenge of reducing carbon emissions while maintaining performance and efficiency.”

“It aligns well with TCS’ commitment to harness technology for positive societal impact and building a greener future,” Regu concluded.

A Long-Standing Relationship between TCS and Rolls-Royce

The partnership between Rolls-Royce and the Tata Group extends beyond this recent collaboration. Tata Consultancy Services has been working closely with Rolls-Royce since 2010, contributing to various aspects of their operations:

Design and Manufacturing Engineering: TCS supports Rolls-Royce in designing cutting-edge aviation components. Collaborative efforts have led to advancements in engine technology.

Control Systems and Software: TCS’s software solutions enhance the performance and safety of Rolls-Royce engines. These systems play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations during flight.

After-Market Services and IT Support: TCS assists Rolls-Royce in maintaining and optimizing engines post-production. IT services ensure seamless communication and data management.

Alan Newby, Director, Research and Technology, Rolls-Royce, said, “We welcome TCS to our hydrogen research programme and their engineering skills will play a valuable role in addressing our technology goals.”

He added, “We’ve already made great progress and having TCS with us gives us additional capability as we move forward on our journey to enable the energy transition for the aviation sector.”

Anupam Singhal, President – Manufacturing, TCS, said, “The partnership between TCS and Rolls-Royce is an exciting one that represents a powerful alliance in the quest for sustainable aviation solutions.”

Anupam added, “We are aligned with Rolls-Royce’s ambition for a greener future. This partnership is the perfect opportunity to put our technological strengths and passion for the environment to use for advancing innovation and fostering an eco-friendlier aerospace sector.”

TCS Sustainability Journey

As a Tata group company, TCS is acutely aware of its environmental impact.

In 2021, the company set ambitious sustainability targets, aiming to reduce absolute emissions by 70% across Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2025 (compared to the baseline year 2016).

Remarkably, TCS achieved an 80% reduction ahead of schedule, demonstrating its commitment to environmental stewardship.

Conclusion

The expanded partnership between TCS and Rolls-Royce represents a significant step toward a greener aviation industry.

By combining expertise, innovation, and sustainability, they aim to propel hydrogen into the forefront of aviation fuels. As skies become cleaner and more sustainable, TCS and Rolls-Royce continue to lead the way.
