New research conducted by BSI (Business Standards Company) sheds light on the evolving public perception of artificial intelligence (AI) in India.
The study reveals that optimism about AI’s capabilities is on the rise, with a significant proportion of respondents expressing confidence in AI’s potential impact on their work and daily lives.
Key Findings of BSI Report
Job-Related Confidence in AI: 55% of Indian respondents believe that AI could handle some aspects of their jobs, a substantial increase from 37% reported in 2023.
53% feel that AI could perform menial tasks—a remarkable shift from just 10% in the previous year.
Collaborating with AI “Colleagues”: Three in five Indians (62%) expect to be working alongside AI “colleagues” by 2050, making India the most optimistic country among those surveyed.
This expectation reflects a growing acceptance of AI as a collaborative tool rather than a threat.
Standardization and Privacy Concerns: While confidence in AI is rising, 65% of respondents believe there should be a standardized system for flagging issues or inaccuracies with AI tools.
61% express privacy concerns when interacting with AI-driven technologies, emphasizing the need for responsible AI deployment.
BSI Report: Future Technological Expectations
Flying Personal Vehicles and Robot Police Officers: 34% of respondents predict the emergence of flying personal vehicles, envisioning a futuristic transportation landscape.
Robot police officers also feature in these expectations, highlighting the integration of AI into law enforcement.
AI Systems Matching or Surpassing Human Capabilities: By 2055, 52% of respondents expect AI systems capable of matching or surpassing human capabilities.
This aspiration reflects the belief in AI’s transformative potential.
Fully Autonomous Vehicles: 48% foresee fully autonomous vehicles becoming part of daily life, revolutionizing transportation and mobility.
Other Innovations: Respondents anticipate breakthroughs such as anti-aging drugs (42%) and space-based solar power (50%).
Support for an All-Electric and Connected Society
Strong Backing for Transition: 89% of Indian respondents support the shift toward an all-electric and connected society, even if it requires sharing more personal data.
This aligns with global efforts toward sustainability and technological advancement.
Enhancing Participation and Reliability: One-third of respondents believe this transition could improve participation in society for individuals with specific care needs.
Similarly, public transport reliability and emissions reduction receive significant support.
Global Context of BSI Survey
Theuns Kotze, Managing Director of BSI Group India Private Ltd, believes that India’s embrace of AI and quantum computing can lead to positive outcomes.
He emphasizes that trust and thoughtful governance are essential for realizing their full potential.
Philippe Metzger, IEC Secretary-General, highlights the transformative potential of AI and quantum technologies while emphasizing the need for trust and robust frameworks.
IEC’s commitment to standards and conformity assessment reinforces this vision.
While AI gains confidence, quantum computing remains less familiar to global consumers.
Only 49% believe that governments and experts sufficiently communicate the opportunities and risks of supercomputing.
Concerns include dependence on computing technologies and increased carbon emissions.
In summary, India’s optimism about AI’s potential is growing, driven by increased familiarity and positive expectations.
As AI continues to evolve, responsible deployment and collaboration will be crucial to realizing its benefits while addressing privacy and standardization concerns.
