eShram Portal: A Gateway to Social Security for Gig Workers

In a significant development aimed at safeguarding the welfare of gig workers and platform workers, the Government of India, under the leadership of Union Minister for Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, is actively exploring avenues to extend social security benefits to this crucial segment of our workforce.

The Minister’s commitment to their well-being underscores the importance of ensuring that gig and platform workers receive the social security they deserve.

The eShram Portal: Facilitating Registration

To implement social security measures effectively, Dr. Mandaviya announced that the registration of workers would take place on the eShram Portal.

This online platform will streamline the registration process, with aggregators—companies employing gig and platform workers. This will be playing a pivotal role in ensuring smooth and efficient registration.

For the first time, the Code on Social Security, 2020 provides a clear definition of gig and platform workers in India. This recognition formalizes their roles within our economy, acknowledging their significance and contribution.

The Code aims to bridge the gap between traditional employment and the evolving nature of work in the digital age.

Commitment to Inclusive Growth of Gig Workers

Dr. Mandaviya reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to inclusive growth. Regardless of employment status, every worker in India deserves the right to social security.

Gig and platform workers, often operate in dynamic and flexible work arrangements. They will now find their rights protected under this comprehensive framework.

The Ministry of Labour & Employment is collaborating closely with stakeholders to develop a robust framework. This framework will adapt to the changing landscape of work, ensuring adequate protection for gig and platform workers.

The Social Security Fund, a key component, will finance welfare schemes aimed at enhancing the lives of these workers.
