Prime Minister Modi Unveils Indian Institute of Skills in Mumbai

In a significant step towards enhancing the employability of Indian youth for national and global opportunities, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai.

This institute aims to cultivate an industry-ready workforce for Industry 4.0, equipped with cutting-edge technology and hands-on training across a range of trades.

About Indian Institute of Skills Mumbai

The Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, and Tata IIS—a section 8 company under Tata Trusts.

Established through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, IIS Mumbai focuses on preparing students for the demands of Industry 4.0.

The institute offers specialized courses in various domains, ensuring that graduates are well-equipped to contribute to new-age industries.

IIS Mumbai initially launches six specialized courses:

Advanced Industrial Automation & Robotics: Students learn about cutting-edge automation technologies, preparing them for roles in factories and manufacturing units.

Industrial Automation Fundamentals: A foundational course covering essential concepts in industrial automation.

Advanced ARC Welding Techniques: Focusing on welding technologies, this course equips students with practical skills.

Additive Manufacturing: Students explore 3D printing and additive manufacturing processes.

Electric Vehicle Battery Specialist: With the rise of electric vehicles, this course trains students in battery technology.

2&3 Wheeler EV Technician: A program tailored for the growing electric vehicle sector.

IIS Mumbai boasts advanced laboratories developed in partnership with over 15 global and Indian Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).

These labs provide practical experience using real industry equipment at an affordable cost. Students gain hands-on exposure, ensuring they are job-ready upon completion of their training.

The institute also plans to extend hostel facilities to enhance the overall learning experience.

Industry Partnerships and Vision

In addition to its core offerings, IIS collaborates with industry partners to offer short-term courses. Some of these partnerships include:

Industrial Robotics with Fanuc India: Students learn about robotic systems and automation.

Industrial Automation with SMC India: Focusing on pneumatic and automation solutions.

Culinary & Core Housekeeping with Taj Skyline: A unique program catering to the hospitality sector.

Jayant Chaudhary, Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, emphasized the importance of institutions like IIS.

He stated that they play a pivotal role in shaping a future-ready workforce, aligning with the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s vision of India as the ‘Skill Capital of the World.’

By equipping Indian youth with cutting-edge expertise, IIS not only opens doors to opportunities within India but also positions them to compete and excel in global markets.
