Namita Thapar Fires Back at Narayana Murthy’s Workweek Advice

In a recent and fiery debate, Namita Thapar, a judge on Shark Tank India, challenged Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy’s advice on a 70-hour workweek.

Namita’s comments have reignited discussions about work-life balance and productivity in India’s corporate culture.

The debate began during an interview with Humans of Bombay, where Namita and fellow Shark Tank India judge Anupam Mittal discussed the merits and drawbacks of long working hours.

Narayana Murthy had previously advised India’s youth to embrace a 70-hour workweek to boost productivity and compete globally.

Namita, however, strongly disagreed, calling the advice a “crock of bullsh*t”.

Namita Thapar Argues in Favor of Worklife Balance

Shark Tank India judge, Namita Thapar argued that founders like herself have significant financial stakes in their businesses, allowing them to work long hours.

However, she emphasized that regular employees do not have the same financial potential and should not be expected to work nonstop.

Namita pointed out that demanding excessive work hours from employees can lead to severe physical and mental health consequences.

Anupam Mittal, founder of Shaadi.com, also weighed in on the debate. He described the fixation on long hours as “a big lie being told to this generation”.

Anupam argued that success comes from strategy and effort, not the number of hours worked.

He cited his company’s hybrid work model, which he claimed increased productivity by 30%, as an example of how work-life harmony can be achieved.

Impact on Work Culture

Namita’s challenge to Narayana Murthy’s advice has sparked a broader conversation about work-life balance in India.

Many professionals and industry experts have joined the debate, discussing the human cost of overwork. They are also emphasizing the need for realistic boundaries.

The discussion has highlighted the importance of creating a more equitable and sustainable work environment for all employees.
