Apple, the tech giant renowned for its sleek iPhones and innovative ecosystem, is making significant strides in India.
As part of its strategy to diversify production away from China, Apple’s Indian operations are poised to yield an impressive 600,000 jobs by the end of this fiscal year.
The Numbers: 200,000 Direct Jobs and Beyond at Apple
Direct Jobs: Apple’s workforce in India will comprise approximately 200,000 direct jobs. What’s noteworthy is that a dominant 70% of these positions will be held by women—a commendable step toward gender inclusivity.
Contract Manufacturers: The three key contract manufacturers—Foxconn, Wistron (now Tata Electronics), and Pegatron—have already created 80,872 direct jobs. These companies play a pivotal role in assembling Apple devices within India.
Broader Suppliers: Beyond the contract manufacturers, broader suppliers such as the Tata Group, Salcomp, Motherson, Foxlink, Sunwoda, ATL, and Jabil have jointly contributed around 84,000 direct jobs. These suppliers are involved in various aspects of the supply chain, from components to assembly.

The Ripple Effect: Indirect Job Creation
Multiplier Effect: For every direct job in the electronics sector, an estimated three indirect jobs are generated. This multiplier effect extends beyond the immediate workforce, impacting local communities and economies.
Total Impact: Based on this multiplier, the Apple ecosystem could potentially create anywhere between 500,000 and 600,000 jobs by March-end. This ripple effect underscores the significance of Apple’s presence in India.
Achieving Targets Ahead of Schedule
When the Indian government introduced the smartphone production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, it aimed to create 200,000 direct jobs over five years. Remarkably, the Apple ecosystem has achieved this target in just four years.
Tata Group’s twin facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is expected to hire around 50,000 employees over time. The upcoming iPhone manufacturing unit, alongside the group’s enclosure manufacturing plant, will commence commercial production this October.
China Parallel: Industry experts draw parallels between Apple’s India strategy and its successful model in China. Over the past 25 years, Apple has created over 4 million jobs in China’s manufacturing and app development ecosystem. Now, it seems India is following suit.
