Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced that India is set to develop its own AI Large Language Model (LLM) within the next 10 months.
This ambitious project aims to rival global AI giants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.
The initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to become self-reliant in AI technology and to cater to the unique linguistic, economic, and social needs of the country.
IndiaAI Mission: Infrastructure and Resources
The IndiaAI mission, approved by the Cabinet in March 2024, is a key component of this strategy.
With an outlay of Rs 10,371.92 crore, the mission aims to create a scalable AI computing ecosystem to support India’s rapidly growing AI startups and research community.
The mission focuses on fostering public-private partnerships to drive AI research and development across the nation.
To support this ambitious project, India has deployed 18,693 graphics processing units (GPUs) under a common computing facility.
This includes 12,896 NVIDIA H100 GPUs and 1,480 NVIDIA H200 GPUs, some of the most powerful AI chips available.
Around 10,000 of these GPUs are available for immediate use, with the remaining to be rolled out gradually.
This advanced computing power is critical for training the AI model and ensuring that India can compete with global AI platforms.
AI Model Development: Sector-Specific Applications
The development of the AI model is expected to take between four to eight months. Some developers estimate completion in as little as four to six months.
They will design the model to handle India’s vast linguistic and cultural diversity while minimizing biases in datasets.
The IndiaAI Compute Facility will provide high-performance computing resources for researchers, startups, and academic institutions working on AI development.
India’s AI strategy focuses on developing models tailored to critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and governance.
Through the IndiaAI Innovation Centre, the country aims to create Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) that address sector-specific challenges.
These models will empower AI-driven solutions in areas that directly impact the country’s development.
Data Security, Privacy, AI Marketplace and Innovation
Ashwini assured that AI services, including those associated with DeepSeek, will be hosted on Indian servers to address global privacy concerns.
This will ensure that data security remains in Indian hands.
This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making modern technology accessible to everyone.
It also ensures that AI solutions are affordable and widely available.
The IndiaAI mission also plans to establish an AI marketplace that will offer AI as a service.
This marketplace will include pre-trained models available for Indian innovators to use in their projects.
This will promote the adoption of AI across industries and boost India’s AI ecosystem.
