TCS Global AI Head: AI is About Skill Transformation, Not Job Loss

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often viewed through the lens of job displacement, sparking fears of widespread unemployment.

Ashok Krish, the Global Head of AI at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), emphasizes that organizations should view AI as a catalyst for skill transformation rather than as a threat to jobs.

In a recent interview, Ashok highlighted the transformative potential of AI, urging organizations to adopt it as a strategic priority rather than merely an IT initiative.

AI as a Catalyst for Transformation

Ashok described artificial intelligence as a cultural and technological shift that reshapes how people work.

He compared it to previous waves of disruptive technologies, such as the internet and cloud computing, which initially sparked concerns but ultimately led to new opportunities and innovations.

According to Ashok, AI is the next evolution in this trend, simplifying processes and enabling the creation of new technologies.

He noted that artificial intelligence is inherently self-reinforcing, meaning that advancements in AI accelerate further progress in the field.

This unique characteristic positions artificial intelligence as a transformative force capable of redefining industries and work dynamics.

Impact on the Workforce

While acknowledging that artificial intelligence may reduce the number of people required for certain tasks, Ashok emphasized that it also changes the nature of work.

For instance, a project that previously required 100 people might now need only 50, but the scope of work expands to include several new projects and services.

This shift underscores the importance of upskilling and reskilling to remain relevant in an AI-driven world.

Ashok highlighted the role of artificial intelligence in democratizing access to knowledge and skills, making it easier for individuals to adapt to changing job requirements.

He urged professionals to continuously reassess their skills and invest in upskilling using available tools, as AI significantly accelerates and enhances these processes.

Industry Adoption of AI and Applications

Artificial intelligence adoption has grown rapidly across industries such as healthcare, financial services, and manufacturing.

In healthcare, AI is revolutionizing drug discovery and diagnostics, while in financial services, it is enhancing risk assessment and customer experience.

Ashok pointed out that artificial intelligence is now infused into nearly every aspect of TCS’s operations, from cybersecurity to cloud services, driving productivity and innovation.
