Infosys, one of India’s leading IT services companies, has recently made headlines by deferring internal assessments for trainees by a week.
This decision comes in the wake of significant layoffs at its Mysuru campus. There over 300 freshers were terminated after failing to clear internal assessments.
The deferment aims to provide trainees with additional preparation time.
This comes amidst growing concerns and interventions from employee unions and government bodies.
Background and Action on Recent Layoffs at Infosys
The recent layoffs at Infosys have sparked considerable controversy and concern within the IT sector.
The company laid off over 300 freshers who underwent foundational training at its Mysuru campus.
This happened after the trainees failed to clear internal assessments despite being given three attempts.
This move has been criticized by NITES, which has been actively fighting against what it terms “unfair layoffs.”
The company emphasized that the deferment is not a result of external pressure or intervention.
“We are deferring our assessments by a week to provide additional preparation time for our trainees,” Infosys said in a statement.
NITES has claimed that the deferment of assessments was due to its intervention. It also mentioned that subsequent actions taken by government made an impact.
The union escalated the matter to the MoLE, Government of India. They directed Karnataka State Labour Department to investigate and protect the affected employees.
NITES has been vocal about its “unwavering fight against unfair layoffs” and continues to advocate for fair employment practices and job security.
Impact on Trainees and Company’s Stance on Layoffs
The deferment of assessments comes as a relief to the trainees scheduled to undergo them.
Infosys was to assess approximately 800 trainees, with results expected shortly after.
The additional preparation time will help these trainees better prepare and potentially improve their chances of clearing the assessments.
Infosys has defended its decision to lay off freshers who failed to clear the internal assessments.
The company stated that their hiring process is rigorous and designed to ensure high-quality talent.
The company clarified that it gives all freshers three attempts to clear the assessments. Those who fail to do so are not able to continue with the organization.
This policy is clearly mentioned in their contracts.
