Google Return-to-Office Policy Sparks Employee Backlash

Google, one of the tech giants at the forefront of hybrid work policies, has recently faced employee backlash over its return-to-office (RTO) approach.

The company’s mixed messaging and evolving guidelines have left many employees feeling frustrated and uncertain about their work arrangements.

The Backstory and Badge Tracking

Last week, Google updated its hybrid three-day-a-week office policy, introducing badge tracking and attendance monitoring.

While the company grapples with real estate downsizing and cost-cutting measures, it simultaneously pushes employees back into physical office spaces.

This move has sparked concern among staffers who feel that management is overreaching in its oversight of physical attendance. Some employees have even likened the situation to being treated like schoolchildren.

Under the updated policy, badge tracking data is collected and aggregated for company leaders. Google insists that individual employee badge data is not shared in reports.

However, the inclusion of attendance in performance reviews has raised eyebrows. Employees worry that their physical presence is being prioritized over their actual work output.

The sentiment expressed by one highly rated internal meme sums it up: “Check my work, not my badge”.

Remote Work Reevaluation and Response from Google

Adding to the uncertainty, employees who previously received approval for remote work may now have their status reevaluated. This poses challenges for those who relocated to different cities or states during the pandemic.

The question remains: Will Google continue to support remote work for these individuals, or will they be compelled to return to the office?

Ryan Lamont, a Google spokesperson, clarified that the badge data collected is primarily for company leaders to assess team adoption of the hybrid work model

Managers of non-remote employees consistently absent from the office will be informed via email, allowing them to support employees in either returning to the office or exploring other flexibility options.
