Infosys, India’s second-largest IT services company, has implemented a “system intervention” to ensure compliance with its hybrid work model.
Effective March 10, 2025, this initiative mandates employees to work from the office for at least 10 days a month.
The move aims to foster collaboration among teams while maintaining flexibility for employees.
This policy applies to employees at Job Level 5 (JL5) and below, including software engineers, senior engineers, system engineers, and consultants.
Details of the System Intervention at Infosys
The “system intervention” involves technological measures to limit the number of work-from-home (WFH) days employees can apply for each month.
Infosys employees use a mobile app to record attendance, and under the new system, WFH requests will no longer be approved by default.
Employees must now ensure they meet the 10-day work-from-office requirement, or the shortfall will be deducted from their leave balance.
The policy is designed to balance flexibility with the need for in-person collaboration.
While the hybrid model allows employees to work remotely for the remaining days of the month, the company emphasizes that the 10-day minimum is essential for effective teamwork and project requirements.
Targeted Employee Groups, Employee Reactions and Challenges
The policy specifically targets employees at JL5 and below, which includes team leaders and junior to mid-level staff.
Employees at higher levels, such as managers and senior managers (JL6 and above), are not subject to this mandate.
This distinction reflects the company’s focus on ensuring that operational and project-based roles benefit from in-person collaboration.
The new policy has elicited mixed reactions from employees.
While some appreciate the opportunity for face-to-face interaction, others express concerns about the impact on work-life balance and productivity.
Employees who save significant commute time by working remotely worry that the policy may lead to exhaustion and reduced efficiency.
Additionally, the deduction of leave days for non-compliance has raised questions about fairness and flexibility.
Infosys’ Broader Hybrid Work Strategy and Industry Context
Infosys introduced its hybrid work model in November 2023, requiring employees to work from the office for at least 10 days a month or 30 days per quarter.
The company also designated specific weeks as “In-Person Collaboration Weeks,” during which all team members are expected to be present in the office.
These initiatives aim to enhance teamwork and innovation while adapting to the evolving work environment.
Infosys’ move aligns with broader trends in the IT industry, where companies are increasingly encouraging employees to return to the office.
Rival firms like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wipro have implemented similar policies, linking office attendance to variable pay and requiring employees to work from the office for a set number of days each week.
These measures reflect the industry’s shift towards a balanced approach to remote and in-office work.
