Infosys, one of India’s leading IT services companies, has introduced new guidelines for its hybrid work model, requiring employees to seek managerial approval for additional work-from-home (WFH) days.
The updated policy, effective from March 10, 2025, mandates that employees must work from the office for at least 10 days a month.
Key Highlights of Infosys Return-To-Office Policy
The revised hybrid work policy applies to employees at Job Level 5 (JL5) and below, which includes team leaders, software engineers, senior engineers, system engineers, and consultants.
Employees at higher levels, such as managers and senior managers, are subject to different guidelines.
The policy emphasizes that employees must adhere to the minimum 10-day in-office requirement or meet specific business needs, whichever is greater.
To ensure compliance, Infosys has implemented a “system intervention” mechanism.
Employees are required to record their attendance through an internal app, which tracks the number of WFH days used and the remaining balance.
Any additional WFH days beyond the allocated limit will be flagged as exceptions, necessitating approval from the employee’s manager.
Managers have the discretion to approve or deny these requests based on individual circumstances and team requirements.
Infosys Employee Concerns and Clarifications
The announcement has sparked concerns among employees, particularly regarding the potential impact on their leave balances and the role of managerial discretion.
Some employees fear that deviations from the policy could result in leave deductions.
Infosys has addressed these concerns by clarifying that the policy aims to ensure compliance with hybrid work requirements while providing flexibility for employees.
The company has also emphasized the importance of in-office collaboration for effective teamwork, mentoring, and accountability.
In an internal communication, Infosys highlighted that managers play a crucial role in setting standards for team engagement and reinforcing the value of in-person interactions.
Industry Context and Comparisons
Infosys’ updated policy aligns with a broader trend among IT companies to encourage employees to return to the office.
The shift comes in the wake of challenges such as employee moonlighting, team-building gaps, and delivery inefficiencies observed during prolonged remote work periods.
For instance, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has linked its five-day work-from-office policy to variable pay, while Wipro allows employees to work remotely for up to 30 days a year under its hybrid model.
Infosys initially introduced its return-to-office policy in November 2023, designating specific weeks as “in-person collaboration” periods.
The latest update builds on this framework by formalizing attendance requirements and introducing stricter monitoring mechanisms.
