India’s labor minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, has called for a redefinition of the term “job” to include self-employed individuals.
This move aims to better reflect the diverse nature of the country’s workforce and align skills training with industry needs.
Mansukh’s statement comes at a time when India’s economic growth is boosting purchasing power and driving demand for a skilled workforce.
Redefining Job for Self-Employed Individuals
Mansukh emphasized the need to broaden the definition of “job” to encompass self-employed people.
He believes that this change will help India reap the benefits of its demographic dividend and ensure that the definition of employment aligns with the realities of the modern workforce.
The current definition of job, which primarily focuses on traditional employment, does not adequately capture the contributions of self-employed individuals.
In addition to redefining the term “job,” Mansukh highlighted the importance of aligning skills training with industry needs.
He pointed out that skills get automatically generated when demand increases, and there is a need to change the mindset of India’s youth to link skill enhancement with industry requirements.
This approach will help create a more dynamic and responsive workforce that can adapt to changing market demands.
Employability Report, Economic Growth and Purchasing Power
A new employability report revealed that India’s national employability rate stands at 54.8%, with variations across states and gender.
The report, prepared by Wheebox in collaboration with the AICTE, the Association of Indian Universities, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and Taggd, analyzed the employability of Indian graduates based on the results of the Wheebox Global Employability Test (GET).
Maharashtra led with 84% employability, followed by Delhi (78%), Karnataka (75%), Andhra Pradesh (72%), Kerala (71%), and Uttar Pradesh (70%).
Mansukh noted that India’s high growth rate of 7-8% will lead to an increase in purchasing power.
This increase will push consumption, manufacturing, and demand for a skilled workforce.
He emphasized the need to tweak the definition of job to include self-employed individuals.
This change will ensure that all segments of the workforce are recognized and supported.
