Diageo India, the country’s leading beverage alcohol company and a subsidiary of global giant Diageo Plc, has announced a new Carer’s Leave Policy aimed at supporting employees who shoulder caregiving responsibilities.
The policy, unveiled on September 12, 2025, offers up to five paid days of leave annually to full-time employees who need to care for loved ones dealing with long-term health conditions, age-related needs, disabilities, or chronic illnesses.
This initiative shows Diageo India’s ongoing commitment to building a supportive workplace.
It recognizes the diverse personal roles employees play and backs them through meaningful, flexible policies.
Key Features of the Carer’s Leave Policy
The Carer’s Leave Policy is designed to provide practical support to employees managing caregiving duties alongside professional responsibilities.
Its key provisions include:
- Five Paid Leave Days Annually: Full-time employees can avail up to five paid days each year to care for family members requiring sustained support.
- Half-Day Flexibility: Leave can be taken in half-day increments, allowing employees to respond to caregiving needs without disrupting their work schedules entirely.
- Applicability Across Life Stages: The policy covers caregiving for children, ageing parents, partners, or any loved one in recovery or with chronic conditions.
This flexibility is particularly relevant for India’s growing “sandwich generation”—employees who simultaneously care for young children and elderly parents.
Diageo India’s policy acknowledges this dual burden and seeks to ease the pressure through structured support.
Leadership Perspective: Care and Courage at the Core
Shilpa Vaid is the Chief Human Resources Officer at Diageo India. She emphasized the importance of recognizing caregiving as a legitimate and often invisible responsibility.
“Many of us play the role of caregiver outside of work, whether for children, ageing parents, or loved ones in recovery.”
“Our Carer’s Leave Policy ensures that our people don’t have to choose between being present at home and thriving at work,” she said.
Shilpa added that the policy reflects Diageo’s belief that care and courage go hand in hand.
She emphasized that when employees feel supported, they can contribute more meaningfully at work and in their personal lives.
Diageo Expanding a Portfolio of Progressive Policies
The Carer’s Leave Policy joins Diageo India’s growing suite of progressive workplace policies.
These include:
- Gender-Neutral Parental Leave
- Guidelines for Pregnancy Loss
- Support for Fertility and Menopause
- Holistic Wellbeing Initiatives
These policies reflect Diageo’s purpose of “Celebrating Life, Every Day, Everywhere.”
They also demonstrate the company’s commitment to creating a workplace that honors all life stages, challenges, and identities.
