GURUGRAM: A city-based IT firm was allegedly duped of more than Rs 15 lakh by its employees by making a fraudulent booking using an account of the company’s international client.

Police said the fraud came to light when it was discovered that the accused received booking amounts in Indian currency from Europeans and Americans instead of dollars.

The IT firm, IGT, is engaged in providing IT/IT-enabled services and business process management to its clients worldwide. The fraud was related to one of its clients – an international airline. The company, through its agents, provides customer care and back-office services to the international airline which includes making bookings, refunds, and other services for the end-customers of the airline.

“On April 15 the airline alerted the victim company about 56 fraudulent transactions wherein the amount was transferred in Indian currency which was suspicious as all bookings were related to international customers,” said the manager of the company, Manmeet Bakshi.

Following an internal investigation, it came to light that one current employee, Karan Singh, three former employees, Mohammad Anas, Garima Vohra and Prashant Kumar, and six other unknown persons were involved in duping the company of Rs 14.67 lakh.

The company officials then filed a complaint against the accused and following an initial investigation they were booked on Friday under IPC Section 420 (cheating) and Section 66 D (impersonation by using computer resource) of the IT Act at the cyber police station.

“Karan’s account was used for fraudulent transactions. A detailed investigation is underway,” said police spokesperson Subhash Boken.
