In a shocking turn of events, Focus Edumatics, a US-based education firm operating in Coimbatore, has laid off hundreds of employees without prior notice.

The abrupt termination has led to widespread protests by the affected employees, who gathered outside the labour office demanding justice and resolution of their pending payments.

The incident has raised questions about the accountability of companies and the protection of workers’ rights.

The protests in Coimbatore highlight the vulnerability of employees in the face of sudden corporate decisions.

The case has drawn attention to the need for stronger regulations and support systems to protect workers from such abrupt and unfair terminations.

Layoffs and Employee Protests at Focus Edumatics

On January 27, 2025, employees arrived at the Focus Edumatics office in Coimbatore only to discover that they had been laid off through an email sent over the weekend.

The email informed them of their termination, leaving many shocked and confused.

Anurag Balakrishnan, who had worked at the company for over two years, expressed his frustration, saying, “We haven’t received any updates regarding our salaries.”

He added, “Employees with over five years of service are unsure about their gratuity and other dues.”

In response to the sudden layoffs, hundreds of employees staged a protest outside the labour office. They demanded justice and resolution of their pending payments.

The affected workers submitted a petition to District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati. They sought the government’s assistance in securing their pending salaries.

Viji, one of the protesting employees, voiced her frustration, saying, “We don’t know why Focus Edumatics was shut down.”

Viji added, “We have been struggling since yesterday to get our salaries, and the higher officials are not responding.”

Petition and Government Intervention

The petition submitted by the employees highlighted the lack of communication and the abrupt nature of the layoffs.

The employees demanded that the company provide their salaries for the current month and certificates stating the reason for dismissal.

District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has directed the city police to investigate the matter further.

Authorities will investigate the company’s operations, the legality of the layoffs, and the claims of unpaid dues.

The layoffs have had a significant impact on the employees. Many of them have served the company for over two years.

The lack of prior notice and the company’s unresponsiveness have added to their difficulties in finding new employment.

The employees emphasized the importance of receiving relieving orders and experience certificates to apply for other jobs.

Layoffs at Focus Edumatics: Company’s Silence

Focus Edumatics has remained silent on the matter, with no official statement regarding the layoffs or the reasons behind them.

The company’s offices in RS Puram and Sungam have become unreachable, leaving the affected workers in a difficult situation.

The employees have urged authorities to act swiftly to ensure they receive their dues and necessary documentation.
