Northvolt, a prominent battery manufacturer in Europe, has recently announced significant cost-cutting measures aimed at improving financial stability and operational performance.
As part of this strategy, the company is refocusing its activities and considering job reductions.
The Situation at Northvolt
Northvolt faces several challenges:
Despite manufacturing battery cells in Skellefteå since late 2022, Northvolt has struggled with high production waste. This issue not only incurs substantial costs but also hampers the delivery volume of cells.
Northvolt’s shareholder, BMW, recently canceled a billion-dollar order due to these production challenges. The overall decline in electric vehicle (EV) demand indirectly affects Northvolt’s business.

Strategic Actions Taken by The Company
Cathode Material Production Suspension: Northvolt will temporarily suspend the production of cathode material at its Swedish headquarters in Skelleftea. However, cell production at the same site will continue without interruption.
Cancellation of Plans: The company has canceled its plans for a cathode factory in Borlänge, Sweden. The site will be put up for sale.
Battery Storage Systems Factory Investor Search: Northvolt is actively seeking an investor for its factory dedicated to battery storage systems in Gdansk, Poland.
Review of Expansion Plans: Northvolt’s planned cell factories in Germany and Canada remain unaffected for now. However, expansion timelines for these factories may be adjusted later than initially planned.

Potential Job Cuts at Northvolt
While Northvolt’s CEO, Peter Carlsson, hinted at redundancies as part of the cost-cutting measures, the exact extent of job cuts has not been specified.
The company is carefully evaluating its workforce needs to match the reduced scale of operations. The goal is to secure Northvolt’s future while maintaining its core business—battery cell production.
