As the pandemic receded, moonlighting emerged as a hot topic once again, particularly among Gen Z professionals.

This generation, born between 1996 and 2010, is reshaping the workforce with its unique values, behaviors, and expectations. Let’s understand the fascinating world of Gen Z and their perspective on moonlighting.

The Growing Trend

In 2024, Gen Z is poised to overtake Baby Boomers in the full-time workforce.

Their upbringing has been fundamentally different from previous generations, characterized by rapid technological changes and reshaped social experiences. For Gen Z, disruption and impermanence are norms, not exceptions.

They expect constant change and exhibit flexibility and resilience. Gen Z possesses a strong sense of self-agency. Growing up in a world where information is just a search engine away, they question everything.

Elders aren’t automatically seen as experts; Gen Z wants to understand the “why” behind processes. Pragmatic and curious, they challenge conventions and seek their own understanding.

Gen Zers not only expect change but demand it. They inherit complex global problems—climate change, inequality, racial injustice—and want to be part of the solution.

They seek workplaces aligned with their values, where they can contribute to positive change. Some even hold employers accountable on social and environmental issues.

Moonlighting: A Valuable Career Strategy

A recent poll conducted by the social discovery app Hunch revealed that 71.4% of Gen Z professionals endorse moonlighting as a valuable career strategy.

Moonlighting allows them to explore interests, gain new experiences, and boost income. It empowers them to pursue passions while building a versatile skill set.

However, not everyone embraces this side-hustle approach; about 17.4% of respondents remain undecided, acknowledging the potential for upskilling but unsure about managing the workload.

Roma Priya, Founder of Burgeon Law, estimates that Gen Z will constitute 27% of the workforce by 2025.

Major companies are already adapting policies to attract and retain Gen Z talent, reshaping traditional workplaces. As this generation continues to influence work dynamics, understanding their preferences becomes crucial for organizations.
