New Microsoft Feature Lets Staff Flag Product Misuse

Microsoft has launched a new internal reporting mechanism called Trusted Technology Review, designed to allow employees to confidentially raise concerns about the ethical use and deployment of the company’s technologies.
Microsoft integrated the feature into its existing Integrity Portal and announced it through an internal memo from President Brad Smith on November 5, 2025.
This move comes amid growing scrutiny over Microsoft’s alleged involvement in surveillance operations linked to Israel’s military activities.
The company has faced internal pressure from employees and external criticism regarding the use of its cloud and AI technologies in conflict zones.
New Microsoft Feature: Purpose and Functionality of the New Tool
The Trusted Technology Review form enables employees to report ethical, legal, or human rights concerns related to how Microsoft products are developed or deployed.
According to the company, the process mirrors existing systems used for reporting workplace misconduct, legal violations, or data security breaches.
Brad Smith emphasized that the new feature is intended to give employees a clear and confidential channel to voice concerns about technology misuse.
“We’re adding a new and easy way for employees to report information about practices that may raise ethical or policy questions,” Brad wrote in the memo.
The tool is part of Microsoft’s broader effort to reinforce its internal governance.
It ensures that the company uses its technologies responsibly, especially in sensitive sectors such as defense, surveillance, and law enforcement.
Context: Employee Protests and Public Scrutiny
The launch of the reporting tool follows months of internal unrest.
Microsoft employees have reportedly objected to the use of the company’s cloud services in military operations.
These concerns are especially focused on deployments in the Middle East.
Media reports have highlighted that Israeli military units are using Microsoft’s Azure platform for surveillance purposes.
This includes tracking phone calls of Palestinian civilians.
These revelations prompted calls for greater transparency and accountability within the company.
The new reporting mechanism is seen as a response to these concerns. It offers employees a formal avenue to flag potential misuse without fear of retaliation.
Oversight and Review Mechanisms
Microsoft’s Aether Committee will manage the Trusted Technology Review and oversee responsible AI practices and ethical technology development.
The committee members will evaluate submissions and decide whether to conduct further investigations or implement policy changes.
Microsoft has indicated plans to strengthen pre-contract reviews for sensitive projects. These reviews will place greater emphasis on human rights due diligence.
This includes assessing the potential impact of its technologies before entering into agreements with government or defense entities.
