Why Accenture CEO Says AI Mastery Starts in the C-Suite

During the World Economic Forum, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet issued a stark warning to global business leaders: a fundamental understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer optional.
Julie emphasized that leaders who fail to grasp the mechanics and potential of AI will be unable to guide their organizations through the radical transformations required to remain competitive in the modern era.
Accenture CEO on The Literacy Gap in the C-Suite
Julie noted that while many executives are eager to deploy AI, there is a significant “literacy gap” at the top levels of management.
She argued that leading an AI-driven transformation is fundamentally different from managing traditional IT upgrades.
Because AI influences every facet of an organization—from supply chains to human resources—leaders must understand the technology deeply enough to make informed decisions about ethics, data privacy, and workforce restructuring.
Navigating “Reinvention”
Accenture’s research indicates that “Total Enterprise Reinvention” is the only path forward, yet many companies are struggling to move beyond small-scale pilots.
Julie pointed out that the barrier to scaling AI is rarely the technology itself, but rather a lack of leadership vision.
She urged CEOs to stop delegating AI strategy solely to Chief Technology Officers.
Instead, she insisted that every member of the C-suite must become “AI-fluent” to manage the cultural shifts and operational changes that the technology demands.
Responsible AI and Workforce Impact
A major pillar of Julie’s message focused on the human element.
She highlighted that leaders must be equipped to answer difficult questions about job displacement and reskilling.
If leaders do not understand how AI tools function, they cannot effectively implement “Responsible AI” frameworks that protect employees and customers.
According to Julie, the companies that succeed will be those whose leaders can blend technical knowledge with empathy, ensuring that the workforce is augmented by AI rather than simply replaced by it.
