Japanese industrial giant Hitachi has announced an ambitious expansion plan for its Indian operations, aiming to increase its local workforce by over 5,000 employees over the next five years.

Announced on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, the move underscores the conglomerate’s aggressive bet on India’s booming infrastructure, energy, and digital sectors.

Hitachi Capitalizing on Infrastructure and Energy

The hiring drive is designed to support Hitachi’s involvement in large-scale national projects, particularly in the rail and renewable energy sectors.

Bharat Kaushal, Executive Chairman of Hitachi India, highlighted that the company is moving to capitalize on an estimated $45-50 billion in rail and urban transport spending and nearly $40 billion in energy sector investments.

Hitachi Energy India has already committed to a ₹2,000 crore investment plan to expand manufacturing capacity and research hubs, including a major facility expansion in Mysuru.

The Digital and AI Frontier

Beyond heavy engineering, Hitachi is pivoting toward “Social Innovation” by integrating advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Industrial Automation.

The new hires will be integrated into the company’s global centers of excellence within India to develop scalable, digitally-enabled services.

This includes expanding its payments business. The division manages ATMs and digital payment solutions in partnership with major institutions like the State Bank of India.

India as a Global Export Hub

A key pillar of Hitachi’s strategy uses India as a testing ground for affordable and scalable solutions that the company can export globally.

Bharat noted that India has “conquered the chaos” of supply chain disruptions better than many other regions.

This success positions the country as a stable alternative in the “China Plus One” manufacturing shift.

Hitachi currently maintains a workforce of 42,000 employees.

This expansion will further solidify India’s role as the company’s key growth engine for both domestic and international markets.
