IT Union Slams Wipro Due to Delay in Onboarding 200+ Freshers

Indian IT major Wipro is facing renewed scrutiny as reports emerge that the company has delayed the onboarding of over 200 campus recruits.

The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), a prominent IT union, has officially flagged the issue, calling for government intervention to protect the interests of graduates who have been waiting for nearly two years to begin their professional careers.

A Growing Backlog of Talent

The affected candidates consist primarily of “Elite” and “Turbo” category freshers who received offer letters during the 2022 and 2023 campus placement cycles.

According to NITES, many students have completed all mandatory pre-onboarding training and internships required by Wipro.

Despite this, their joining dates remain indefinitely postponed.

The union alleges that these delays have caused significant financial and mental distress to candidates who turned down other opportunities to join the tech giant.

Wipro Onboarding Delay: The Union’s Stance and Legal Push

NITES has filed a formal complaint with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, urging authorities to take action against the company’s “unethical” practices.

The union argues that Wipro is leveraging its position to keep candidates in limbo without providing a clear roadmap or financial compensation for the delay.

“The career growth of these students is being jeopardized by corporate indecision,” a union spokesperson stated, highlighting that many freshers are now “over-aged” for other entry-level campus recruitment drives.

Wipro’s Operational Justification

Wipro has not issued a specific statement regarding the 200 individual cases.

However, the company has previously cited “macroeconomic headwinds” and a shifting demand environment as reasons for calibrated hiring.

Wipro is navigating a slowdown in discretionary spending from clients in the US and Europe. This challenge is shared by many of its peers in the Indian IT sector.

Internal sources suggest the company is prioritizing the integration of its current bench and lateral hires.

They are focusing on high-priority AI and cloud projects over mass-scale fresher induction.

Wipro Onboarding Delay: Wider Industry Implications

The delay at Wipro is not an isolated incident. Instead, it is part of a broader trend across India’s $250 billion IT industry.

Major firms including Infosys and TCS have also faced criticism for “ghosting” recruits or delaying onboarding by several quarters.

As the industry pivot toward AI-driven automation accelerates, companies are reconsidering the traditional “bench-heavy” model.

This structural shift in global tech hiring leaves thousands of engineering graduates caught in the middle.
