Wipro Enterprises has permanently shut down one of its manufacturing units in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, triggering widespread layoffs.
The decision, announced on May 24, 2025, follows nearly six months of continuous labour unrest and a workers’ strike that began in December 2024.
The closure has left 80 employees without jobs, as disclosed by the company.
Wipro Enterprises’ Workers Turned Away Without Prior Notice
On the morning of May 24, employees arriving for their regular shifts were reportedly turned away at the factory gates by security personnel, who informed them of the closure.
Many workers expressed shock and frustration, claiming they had resumed work in December and were unaware of the company’s final decision.
The shutdown is attributed to operational disruptions and mounting financial losses, with Wipro citing economic unsustainability as the primary reason.
Despite ongoing negotiations with the workers’ union, the two sides failed to reach a settlement.
Disagreements over the withdrawal of police cases filed against some employees reportedly became a major sticking point in the talks.
Labour Dispute and Failed Negotiations
The factory closure comes after months of labour unrest, with employees demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and job security.
The workers’ union had engaged in multiple rounds of discussions with Wipro Enterprises, but no resolution was reached.
The company insisted that the factory was no longer financially viable, leading to the difficult decision to shut down operations.
The union has since filed complaints with the state’s Chief Minister and Labour Department, urging intervention to protect workers’ rights.
Protests have erupted in the area, with employees demanding fair compensation and alternative employment opportunities.
Impact on Local Workforce and Industry
The Baddi unit was a crucial part of Wipro’s manufacturing operations, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Its closure is a major blow to the workforce, affecting not only direct employees but also contract workers and suppliers who relied on the factory’s operations.
While one Wipro factory in Baddi remains operational, the shutdown of this unit reflects the growing strain between employers and workers in India’s industrial belts.
Analysts warn that similar closures could follow if labour disputes and economic challenges persist.
Wipro Enterprises’ Response and Future Plans
Wipro Enterprises has confirmed that it will provide legally mandated compensation and support to the affected workers.
However, the company has not outlined any plans for re-employment or relocation of displaced employees.
A spokesperson stated that Wipro remains committed to the region and will continue contributing to its growth in meaningful ways.
