Amazon Issues Official Statement on May Restructuring Claims

Amazon has officially pushed back against viral reports suggesting the company is planning a massive new round of layoffs for May 2026.
Speculation had been mounting that the e-commerce and cloud giant was preparing to cut an additional 14,000 roles, but a company spokesperson recently dismissed the rumors as “false and not based in fact.”
Origin of Amazon Layoff Rumors
The speculation gained traction following posts on anonymous professional forums like Blind, where users claiming to be Amazon insiders suggested that a major restructuring, dubbed by some as a continuation of “Project Dawn,” was imminent.
These reports suggested that the cuts would primarily target white-collar employees and mid-level managers within Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, and human resources, with rumors even hinting at the potential shutdown of select teams in China.
Despite the intensity of the online chatter, Amazon’s firm denial aims to stabilize internal morale.
The company maintains that there is no verified plan for a widespread workforce reduction next month.

A Year of Significant Downsizing
The anxiety among Amazon’s workforce is rooted in a turbulent year of restructuring. Since late 2025, the company has already eliminated approximately 30,000 roles.
This includes a round of 14,000 layoffs in October 2025 and a record-breaking 16,000-person cut in January 2026.
CEO Andy Jassy has previously stated that these reductions are part of a broader cultural shift to eliminate “bureaucracy taxes” and management layers that accumulated during the pandemic-era hiring surge.
While the company is currently denying the May rumors, leadership has been transparent about wanting a leaner, faster organization.
The AI and Infrastructure Pivot
While denying immediate mass layoffs, Amazon continues to aggressively reallocate its resources.
The firm is reportedly planning to spend over $125 billion on data centers and AI infrastructure through 2026.
In past communications, Jassy has noted that generative AI and autonomous agents could eventually reduce the need for certain manual and administrative corporate roles.
This strategic pivot—moving funds from traditional payroll toward advanced automation—remains a primary source of concern for employees, even as the company clarifies that no specific “May round” is currently on the books.
