PM Internship Scheme, a flagship initiative by the Government of India, has been designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry requirements.
However, during a recent Open House session organized by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), prospective candidates voiced concerns over several aspects of the program.
Issues such as the restrictive age limit, limited job prospects post-internship, and a lack of openings in the IT sector dominated the discussion.
The session, held on March 27, 2025, aimed to address these queries and provide clarity to applicants.
Key Concerns Raised by Candidates Under PM Internship Scheme
- Age Limit Restrictions One of the most debated topics during the Open House was the age limit for applicants. The scheme currently allows participation for individuals aged 21 to 24 years. Several attendees requested an extension of the upper age limit to 25 years, citing challenges in securing job opportunities within the existing framework. Officials reiterated that the age limit is a core eligibility criterion and is unlikely to be revised.
- Job Prospects Post-Internship Many candidates expressed doubts about employment opportunities after completing the internship. Questions were raised about whether interns would be absorbed into the payroll of participating companies. Officials clarified that the scheme does not guarantee employment post-internship. Instead, it aims to enhance employability by providing a year-long hands-on experience and a completion certificate. The decision to hire interns rests solely with the participating companies.
- Limited IT Sector Openings Another significant concern was the limited number of internship opportunities in the IT sector. Candidates highlighted the high demand for IT roles and the disproportionate number of openings compared to other sectors. Officials acknowledged the issue and emphasized ongoing efforts to engage more IT companies in the program. They encouraged candidates to explore opportunities in other sectors as well.
PM Internship Scheme: Program Highlights and Updates
The PM Internship Scheme offers over 1.18 lakh internship opportunities across 735 districts in its second phase, which began in January 2025.
The program targets youth from economically weaker sections, with eligibility criteria including an annual family income of less than ₹8 lakh.
Selected interns receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000, with ₹4,500 contributed by the government and ₹500 by partner companies.
Additional benefits include insurance coverage and a one-time onboarding grant of ₹6,000.
The application process is entirely online, with candidates required to register on the official portal or mobile app.
The second phase has seen increased participation from industries, but officials admit there is still room for improvement in terms of sectoral representation and overall engagement.
Government’s Response and Future Plans
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who launched the mobile app for the scheme earlier this month, urged more companies to participate, emphasizing the program’s potential to contribute to national development.
She acknowledged the need for greater industry involvement to meet the scheme’s objectives.
The MCA has committed to hosting weekly Open House sessions to address candidate queries and improve transparency.
