Vedanta Targets 50% Female Hiring for India’s Energy Transition

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Vedanta Limited has announced a bold new hiring mandate.
The natural resources conglomerate aims to have women comprise over 50% of its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) recruitment starting this year.
This initiative marks a historic shift for India’s metals, mining, and energy sectors—industries that have traditionally been among the most male-dominated in the global economy.
Vedanta Breaking the Glass Ceiling in Heavy Industry
The announcement, made on February 11, 2026, highlights Vedanta’s rapid progress in gender diversity.
Currently, women account for 35% of the company’s STEM fresher intake, a figure that rises to 45% when including leadership and management roles.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Non-Executive Director of Vedanta Ltd. and Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, emphasized that “when girls see these pathways, they don’t just choose STEM, they choose to lead.”
The company has already pioneered several “firsts,” including deploying women in underground mines and establishing all-women production lines in its aluminum business.
Digital Transformation as a Catalyst
A major driver behind this workforce evolution is the adoption of “Industry 4.0” technologies.
By implementing advanced automation, real-time digital monitoring, and standardized safety systems, Vedanta has created a more inclusive and predictable workplace.
These technological upgrades have allowed the company to enable night shifts for women across operations, ensuring operational parity.
Women scientists and engineers are now at the forefront of critical projects.
These projects range from geological modeling in Odisha’s coal mines to optimizing drilling decisions in Rajasthan’s oil fields.
Innovative Retention and Social Impact
To support this 50% hiring goal, Vedanta has introduced progressive policies tailored to different life stages.
These include:
- Spouse Hiring: Facilitating talent mobility for couples.
- Childcare Sabbaticals: A one-year break for caregiving needs.
- Flexible Wellness: A “no-questions-asked” monthly work-from-home day.
- Equity Participation: Extending stock options to women leaders to foster ownership.
Vedanta’s social impact programs have reached over 50,000 girls since 2021.
They provide first-generation learners with the coaching needed to enter elite engineering institutions.
Vedanta is bridging the gap between education and industrial careers. Through this, the company is positioning itself as a global leader in responsible resource development.
