Indian Railways and Army Launch New Job Framework for Veterans

In a significant step toward civil-military integration, Indian Railways and the Indian Army officially launched a “Framework of Cooperation” on February 26, 2026.
This landmark initiative is designed to streamline post-retirement career pathways for Agniveers and veteran Army personnel, ensuring their transition into civilian roles is both structured and sustainable.
Strategic Employment Quotas and Reservations
To facilitate this transition, the Ministry of Railways has implemented robust reservation policies within its recruitment framework.
Under the new guidelines:
- Ex-Servicemen: Will receive a 10% horizontal reservation in Level-2 and above posts, and a 20% reservation in Level-1 posts.
- Ex-Agniveers: Are earmarked for a 5% reservation in Level-2 and above posts, and a 10% reservation in Level-1 posts.
Data revealed that 14,788 posts were notified for ex-servicemen during 2024 and 2025. This total comprised 6,485 positions in Level-1 and 8,303 in Level-2 or above.
Railways Veterans Rapid Deployment: The “Pointsmen” Initiative
To address immediate vacancies and provide swift employment, Indian Railways has begun recruiting over 5,000 veterans as ‘Pointsmen’ on a contractual basis.
These roles serve as an interim measure until regular recruitment cycles are completed.
As of late February 2026, nine Railway Divisions have already signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Army organizations to expedite this hiring process.
Synergizing National Infrastructure
Beyond job creation, the partnership leverages the unique discipline and technical competence of military personnel to strengthen national infrastructure.
The framework emphasizes that the operational experience of veterans is highly compatible with the demands of the Railways.
This is particularly true in the areas of logistics and security coordination.
The Railway Ministry expects strategic projects like the Dedicated Freight Corridors and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link to benefit from this influx of skilled talent.
Indian Railways and the Army are further expanding skill-sharing initiatives through collaborations with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya.
This formally integrates the specialized expertise of the Army into the railway ecosystem.
