TCS to Build World’s Largest AI-Focused Data Centre

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced plans to spearhead the development of the world’s largest AI-focused data centre.

This ambitious project, revealed during the company’s recent strategic roadmap for 2026, aims to provide the massive computational power required to fuel the next generation of generative AI and sovereign AI models specifically tailored for the Indian context.

A Gigawatt-Scale Infrastructure

The proposed facility is expected to be a multi-phase development, potentially reaching a gigawatt-scale capacity.

Unlike traditional data centres, this infrastructure is being designed from the ground up for AI workloads, featuring advanced liquid cooling systems and high-density rack configurations to support the latest GPU clusters.

By building this “AI Factory” on home soil, TCS intends to reduce India’s reliance on foreign hyperscalers and ensure that sensitive national data remains within domestic borders.

TCS AI Data Centre Powering Sovereign AI and Local Innovation

A core objective of this data centre is to support the development of “Sovereign AI”—AI models trained on Indian languages, cultural nuances, and localized datasets.

TCS plans to offer “AI-as-a-Service” to Indian enterprises, government agencies, and startups, allowing them to train large-scale models without the prohibitive costs of international cloud credits.

This move aligns with the Indian government’s “IndiaAI Mission,” which seeks to democratize AI compute access across the country.

Sustainability and the Path to Net Zero

In line with the Tata Group’s commitment to sustainability, the data centre will prioritize green energy.

TCS aims to power a significant portion of the facility using renewable sources, including solar and wind power, to mitigate the high energy demands associated with AI processing.

The project also incorporates AI-driven energy management software to optimize power usage effectiveness (PUE) in real-time.

TCS Strengthening India’s Global Tech Stature

Industry experts view this move as a strategic pivot for TCS. The company is transitioning from a service-oriented giant to an infrastructure and platform powerhouse.

By hosting the world’s largest AI data centre, India positions itself as a global hub for AI research and development.

This allows the country to compete with established tech corridors in the US and China.
